Groin hernias are common condition and surgery can fix the problem. The hernias can be repaired with open or laparoscopic surgery (Key-hole surgery). Laparoscopic procedure if preferred approach when possible.
Laparoscopic surgery is performed under the effects of general anaesthesia. The procedure is performed by extraperitoneal approach – means surgeon is not entering inside your tummy, but works behind muscles.
Your surgeon makes a small incision near the navel and creates a space behind muscles ( Rectus muscle) with special dissecting balloon and inserts a laparoscope through it. Two more incisions are each made on the lower midline of your abdomen to insert special instruments. Carbon dioxide gas is passed to inflate the space so that internal organs are clearly visible on the monitor while the procedure is performed. Your surgeon will reduce or push the protruded part of the hernia into the abdomen and patch the weakened part with a mesh to strengthen the abdominal wall.
Laparoscopic hernia surgery is usually very safe. However, as with any surgery, there are certain risks and complications. They include injury to bowels, spermatic cord, major blood vessels, nerve or urinary bladder. There is a small risk of wound infection or infection of mesh. Like any hernia, there is small risk of recurrence, chronic groin pain and risk of adhesions of bowel to mesh.
