Botox (Botulinum Toxin) is a medication that helps to paralysis (or Relax) the internal sphincter muscle of anus. In anal fissure the muscle is usually in spasm that causes ischemia of the wound and prevent healing of fissure.

Botox is a safe alternate option for chronic fissure. Usually done in theatre under anaesthesia as a day procedure. Typically 50 -100 units of Botox are injected in to the internal sphincter passing a small needle in the space between internal and external sphincter muscles. The effects of the Botox become evident by 5-7 days, and it last 2-3 months. A single treatment of Botox can achieve the healing rates of 60-70%, and the procedure may need to be repeated if required after 3 months.
